How to Get Out of Passive Mode in GTA Online
Getting out of Passive Mode in GTA Online is pretty straightforward once you know where to look, but the small rules around it can catch people off guard. Whether you turned it on to avoid griefers or did it by accident, knowing how it works makes it much easier to jump back into normal play without confusion GTA 5 Modded Accounts.
Passive Mode is there to keep you safe from other players. While it's active, you can't be killed by weapons, vehicles, or explosions, but you also give up the ability to fight back. You won't be able to use weapons, most weaponized vehicles, or take part in certain combat-heavy activities. A lot of players use it just to move around the map peacefully, run setups, or take a break in a public session without constantly being attacked.
The fastest way to turn Passive Mode off is through the Interaction Menu. On PC, press the M key. On PlayStation, hold the touchpad or left on the D-pad, depending on your controller and console. On Xbox, hold the View button. Once the menu opens, scroll until you see the option to enable or disable Passive Mode and select it to turn it off.
You can also do this through the Pause Menu if that feels more natural to you. Pause the game, go to the Online tab, select Options, and then toggle Passive Mode off from there. Both methods work the same way, so it really just depends on which menu you're more comfortable using while playing.
One thing that confuses a lot of players is what happens right after you disable Passive Mode. You don't instantly get full control back. There's a short countdown, usually around 30 seconds, where you're no longer protected but still can't use weapons. This is meant to stop players from instantly attacking the moment they leave Passive Mode. On top of that, there's a cooldown of roughly five minutes before you can turn Passive Mode on again, so you can't keep switching it on and off to dodge fights.
There are also situations where Passive Mode behaves a little differently. If you attack or kill another player, the game can temporarily block you from using Passive Mode for a short time, forcing you to stay exposed. Using certain large or heavily weaponized vehicles, like the Mobile Operations Center, Avenger, or some Terrorbyte setups, can also kick you out of Passive Mode immediately, since those vehicles are built for combat.
Sometimes it can feel like Passive Mode is bugged, especially if the option is greyed out or won't toggle properly. In most cases, this is just a session glitch. Getting into a weaponized vehicle, switching to a new session, or restarting GTA Online entirely usually fixes it and restores the option to work normally.
When you do leave Passive Mode, it's smart to use those few countdown seconds wisely. Move to cover, call in your personal vehicle, or position yourself somewhere safe so you're ready once your weapons come back cheap GTA 5 Accounts. Once you understand how to turn Passive Mode off, how the cooldowns work, and what to do if it acts up, it becomes a useful tool instead of something that feels limiting. You can stay safe when you want and jump back into the chaos the moment you're ready.
