Agatha Christie's Seven Dials - A Netflix Reimagining
How can Agatha Christie's timeless mysteries captivate today’s Netflix viewers?
This was the intriguing challenge posed to Chris Chibnall, creator of Broadchurch, director Chris Sweeney of The Tourist, and executive Suzanne Mackie of The Crown. Their response was a bold cinematic reimagining, drawing inspiration from the suave elegance of Sean Connery’s Bond, Hitchcock’s suspenseful North by Northwest, and the lavish production standards of The Crown.
The outcome is a series titled Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, featuring a stellar cast including Helena Bonham Carter, Martin Freeman, and Mia McKenna-Bruce.
Chibnall emphasized the importance of selecting the right story and crafting a visually striking adaptation. “We aimed for a blockbuster feel—something that feels both thrilling and visually sumptuous, with a Hitchcock Hollywood vibe that balances suspense, humor, and grandeur,” he explained ahead of the Netflix launch.
After establishing her Orchid Pictures label, Mackie tasked Chibnall with choosing a Christie novel suited for streaming’s broad audience. His research led him to The Seven Dials Mystery, a book that diverges from Poirot or Miss Marple. Instead, it follows amateur detective Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent as she unravels espionage and murder connected to a clandestine London club.
Set across glamorous locations and woven with international intrigue, the novel was initially met with mixed reviews, criticized for shifting from Christie’s traditional detective story to a sprawling conspiracy. The Times Literary Supplement at the time lamented that Christie had “abandoned the methodical inquiry for romance and global plotting.”
Yet, Chibnall believes Christie was ahead of her time. “In 1929, she was essentially writing a modern, cinematic script,” he argued. “It’s the critics who were behind the curve. Our goal was to craft a streaming-era adaptation that offers something fresh, not to replicate what others have done.”
Mia McKenna-Bruce, a rising star who gained recognition in indie hit How to Have Sex, shared her enthusiasm for the project. “I fell in love with Bundle and Chris’s scripts immediately,” she said. “I’d never read an Agatha Christie book before, which made me nervous, but once I did, I realized how funny and lively the story is.”
Her character, Bundle, exudes confidence and resilience, qualities that drew McKenna-Bruce in. “She’s someone who can handle anything, and her warmth and ability to connect with others really stood out to me,” she explained. “That’s what I love about acting—bringing those human moments to life.”
Joining the cast is Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Lady Caterham, the mother of McKenna-Bruce’s character. Interestingly, Bonham Carter’s role is a gender swap—she’s the Lord Caterham in the books—an approach that Mackie notes the Christie estate is supportive of, allowing creative flexibility to enrich the storytelling.
Chibnall revealed the moment he shared the casting news with the cast: “When I told Mia about Helena Bonham Carter, she was stunned. It was a wonderful surprise,” he said.
Martin Freeman, cast as Superintendent Battle—a recurring character in Christie’s universe—brings a nuanced balance of wit and depth, which Chibnall describes as “a joy to see in action.”
Is there potential for this series to develop into a franchise? With its innovative approach and star-studded cast, the possibilities appear promising. The adaptation aims to breathe new life into Christie’s work, making it relevant and exciting for a new generation of viewers eager for compelling mysteries on their screens.
