This prevents under- or over-charging of individual cells, which are primary causes of degradation, thereby maximizing the usable capacity and lifetime of the entire system.

The most sophisticated BMS integrates with the higher-level Energy Management System (EMS). For example, the BMS might sacrifice a small amount of fast-response revenue if the high-current cycling would significantly shorten the battery's life, optimizing for net present value over the 15-year life of the asset.
