Matt Murray signed a new three-year deal with the Penguins. USATSI The Pittsburgh Penguins are rewarding the rookie goaltender who backstopped them to a Stanley Cup title last spring with a new contract. Matt Murray, who is currently sidelined with a hand injury, signed a new three-year extension with the team worth $11.25 million. After playing in more playoff games than he did during the regular season, the 22-year-old showed the ability to be the team's No. 1. However, with only 34 total games under his belt, there isn't enough body of work for the Pens to hand over a more lucrative longer-term deal. It's smart to do it now before Murray has a chance to further prove he is their long-term No. 1 and that price goes up. The $3.75 million per season this contract will carry starting in 2017-18 is in line with the extension Tampa Bay Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy signed this summer with more NHL experience under his belt. Vasilevskiy's deal is actually slightly lower than Murray's. The shorter-term Al-Farouq Aminu Jersey bridge deal also buys the Penguins some more time to figure out what to do with their goalie situation going forward. While Murray's NHL sample size isn't enough for the team to make long-range projections of what Murray will be, there's more to his body of work than the remarkable run he had to start his NHL career. Over the last two seasons, Murray appeared in 71 games in the American Hockey League and posted a sterling .936 save percentage. In 2014-15, he was named that league's rookie of the year and received top goalie honors as well. Last season, his performance over 31 games before getting the call to the big club was enough to make him a second-team all-star. He's been trending up each year since the Pens took him in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft. Then there's what Murray did in the postseason, which was nothing short of remarkable. He was between the pipes for 15 of Pittsburgh's 16 wins en route to the Stanley Cup, tying the NHL's rookie record. He also put up a .923 save percentage and 2.08 goals-against average as the Pens claimed the title. Now the question becomes what does Pittsburgh do long-term with its goalie situation? Marc-Andre Fleury still has two years on his contract with a $5.75 million contract. The veteran netminder, who also backstopped the Pens to the Cup in 2009, has been starting every game for Pittsburgh in Murray's absence. On top of that, Fleury has a modified no-trade clause and a no-movement clause, which means he dictates how this will go. Further complicating matters is the looming expansion draft in which the Penguins will have to leave one of their goaltenders exposed unle s they manage to make a move beforehand. Extending Murray is not really a surprise, but the Penguins getting aggre sive on an extension shows just how much they want to make things work long-term with Murray. They can keep the tandem together for the rest of the season and delay their decision on what ultimately to do with the goalies, but Fleury's remaining time with the team in particular seems as though it will be relatively brief.
