007 First Light: James Bond's Hero-Driven Journey
IO Interactive, the studio behind the acclaimed Hitman series, is taking a markedly different approach with its next title, 007 First Light. Rather than offering a reskinned Agent 47 in a tuxedo, the developer is deliberately crafting James Bond as a character-driven hero. Speaking with PC Gamer, art director Rasmus Poulsen drew a clear line between the two protagonists. “If Hitman is a single-minded killer and basically the bad guy of the game,” he said, “Bond is the hero.”
A Hero, Not a Blank Slate
This shift in perspective informs every layer of the game. “That means we are much more focused on his journey as a character, and we are much more focused on saving the world,” Poulsen explained. 007 First Light aims to deliver a cinematic, character-driven experience that puts Bond’s story and personality front and centre. CEO Hakan Abrak reinforced the distinction, describing Agent 47 as an “empty shell” while Bond “is very much a personality.” The secret agent will have opinions, emotions, and a world to save—qualities that were deliberately absent from the neutral, player-shaped Hitman protagonist.
A Different Power Fantasy
Practically, this means 007 First Light is neither a Hitman-style stealth sandbox nor an Uncharted-style action game. IO Interactive plans to lean on its own strengths while building a completely different power fantasy. “We are leaning a lot on what IOI does best,” Poulsen noted, though the team is consciously moving away from cold efficiency toward heroism. The game is scheduled for release sometime in 2026, and the studio is clearly aiming for a fresh, personal take on the iconic secret agent—one that explores what drives him, what he risks, and what it truly means to be the hero.
About 007 First Light
The 007 First Light key to feeling like a legendary spy is its refusal to punish creativity, letting you ghost through a mission or turn a silent takedown into a roaring getaway.
Our review found that beneath the glossy super-spy veneer lies a playground where gadgets, driving, and cover-based gunfights feed an emergent thriller, not a scripted ride.
The result is a Bond experience where a panicked alarm doesn't end the fantasy—it ignites it.
