The rise of AI and machine learning at the edge presents another huge opportunity, creating demand for high-performance, GPU-accelerated infrastructure in distributed locations. Regulatory and zoning hurdles can also pose a threat, as deploying new infrastructure, particularly in dense urban areas, can be a slow and complicated process involving numerous permits and approvals. There is also the threat of intense competition and potential market consolidation, which could lead to a few dominant players controlling the edge, potentially stifling innovation and creating vendor lock-in. Finally, a long-term threat could come from advancements in on-device processing power. As smartphones, vehicles, and IoT devices become more powerful, they may be able to handle more processing locally, potentially reducing the need to offload tasks to a nearby edge data center for certain applications.
